Cregger’s Resident Evil is dated 18 September

Sony Pictures Releasing has dated Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil 18 September 2026 in the United States. Fantastic Fest screens it on 17 September. Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, in association with TriStar, with Davis Films, Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions. About ninety-three minutes. About US$80 million. Filmed for IMAX. A horror picture, not a game you already finished.

Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier making a delivery to Raccoon City General when an outbreak turns the night into a race. Zach Cherry is Dave. Kali Reis is Pauline. Paul Walter Hauser is Carl. Johnno Wilson is Max. Cregger directed and co-wrote with Shay Hatten. The official site calls it a reinvention. Wikipedia calls it the second reboot and the eighth film in the live-action series, based on Capcom’s games, not on Paul W. S. Anderson’s pictures and not on 2021’s Welcome to Raccoon City.

Cregger was hired in January 2025. Four studios bid, among them Warner Bros. Pictures and Netflix. Columbia won in March, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter both filed. Sony, which had co-produced earlier live-action films under Screen Gems, took this one with Columbia and TriStar under Nicole Brown. Constantin remains the rights holder. PlayStation Productions is in the credits. That is a games company putting its name on a picture about a games city, with a story the director says is not Leon’s.

In August 2025 Cregger told interviewers he would not tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is already in the games. He compared the picture to Evil Dead II, not to Barbarian or Weapons, even though those are the films that put his name on a marquee. He called it a love letter to the games, and said he had never seen the previous Resident Evil movies. In September 2025 he named Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, and Resident Evil 4 as the games he was closer to. In an April 2026 PlayStation Blog conversation he said he wrote the film to sit concurrently with the Raccoon City outbreak in Resident Evil 2, in a contemporary period, on the periphery: the city having its big night, another story in parallel, honouring the vibe and the pacing of play.

Abrams was in talks in March 2025, confirmed in July, after Weapons. Hauser joined in September. Cherry, Reis, and Wilson were announced in October. The Hollywood Reporter said Reis’s part had been written for a man, an ex-military character. Wikipedia’s current page lists Pauline as an Umbrella scientist, with Cherry’s Dave also a scientist, Hauser’s Carl a scientist, Wilson’s Max an Umbrella enforcer. This filing keeps the names and the courier. It does not invent a scene between them.

Principal photography began in Prague on 10 October 2025. Dariusz Wolski is cinematographer. Joe Murphy is editor. The Prague Reporter put the Czech start in Litoměřice that week. Polygon visited the set and described a skyscraper hospital inspired by London’s Guy’s Tower, and a working elevator, a skybridge, and an emergency staircase built on a lot called T-Stage. Production designer Tom Hammock put six doors on a hallway so a viewer would not know which one the next threat would use. Cregger wanted to avoid visual effects as much as possible. Practical rooms. A courier. A night. By February 2026 the picture was in the edit.

An official trailer went out on 23 July 2026. Deadline’s Matt Grobar and Patrick Hipes filed it that day. Sony’s site and several 4K uploads carry the same beats: a B-7 run, a package that might be a kidney or a liver, a call that drops, a voicemail to Michelle, Raccoon City General as the destination, a night that collapses in hours. YouTube identifiers in circulation include 9Aiv1cqmH4w and mNd1gb19A-c. A teaser, SJPu1spHqfk, had already shown a door and a dead phone. This desk is not the trailer. This desk is the date.

18 September is a Friday. 17 September is Fantastic Fest in Austin, the 21st edition, with Resident Evil on the lineup alongside other horror titles. iHorror and IndieWire both named it among the festival’s lead titles in mid-August. A festival night, then a wide night. That is a studio showing its hand. Upcoming is a beat. Dates are journalism. A courier into a city that already had a famous night in 1998 is a parallel, not a remake of Leon and Claire walking a police station.

Capcom’s game is still the game. Cregger’s picture is a 2026 theatrical object with a courier, a hospital, a Prague-built tower, IMAX cameras, and a September window. Welcome to Raccoon City, in 2021, tried a closer walk through the game’s map and did not hold the theatrical air. Anderson’s films were their own cartoon of the brand. This one is the second reboot because the first reboots used up their names. The news is the date, the director, the courier, the festival, the minutes, the money, the city on the periphery of a night the games already told.
