Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy shipped on 27 August 2026. Asobo Studio built it. Focus Entertainment published it. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Xbox Game Pass on day one. Xbox Play Anywhere on the same Focus page. The publisher's launch note, 27 August, said Sophia's journey begins today on consoles and PC. This is a review of the cart that unlocked on Thursday, not a Showcase leftover from June.
The publisher's line is a prequel, set fifteen years before A Plague Tale: Requiem. You play Sophia, a plunderer on the run, walking toward the Minotaur's Island with a stolen Minoan sphere and a notebook that is not flavour. David Dedeine, Asobo's co-founder and creative director, wrote on Xbox Wire on 9 June 2025 that you do not need the earlier games to sit down. He also wrote that Amicia and Hugo's story had come to an end. That is the invitation. The still on this page is a bronze sphere, an open notebook, a lamp.
Sophia is the sidekick who got the camera. She was already in Requiem. Resonance is the years before that. Focus and Steam print the same geography: Venice is where she learned to fight, inside a gang; the island is where the game actually happens. Leni goes with her. An army follows. Other plunderers want the treasure and think she is the traitor. WCCFTech's 27 August review, on a PS5 copy from Focus, is the public record for the opening hours: a convent, a father who does not come back from the island, a double-cross in Venice, then the boat. The ending stays off the page. The verbs do not.

The new verb is the parry. Dedeine's 9 June 2025 Xbox Wire piece is specific. Sophia is lethal with a sword and a dagger. Every wound can also be fatal. She parries and counters with finishers. A kick opens a shield. A timed dodge destabilises a heavier body. The island has items that change those options. That is the studio talking before launch. WCCFTech, after launch, found the same loop and found it thin: tap to slash, hold for a heavier strike, block, parry, kick, a grappling hook that staggers, a super that arrives if you keep hitting. Three hits and you are down, and that number does not grow. A kill gives life back. There is no invincibility blink on a hit. Their score stays off the page. Their verbs do not, because the verbs are the review.
Vincent Trinel, a level designer, told Xbox Wire on 20 August that Amicia's maps were marked. White paint said climb here. Sophia's maps are the opposite. Jump and climb are the default. The restriction is where you must not go. The grappling hook, he said, will take ten metres. Chase sequences that used to be scripted now ask you to be agile. That is a design change, not a trailer adjective. If you came for the old Plague Tale, you came for a girl who was not a fighter, hiding from rats. Resonance is a fighter who is also hiding, later, from something that is not a soldier. Carol Ann Bañuls, lead writer on that same 20 August page, said the Macula has a different form here, and that rats were such an important part of Requiem that extending the lore without them was the hard sentence. That is the hard sentence. There is no rat count here because none was counted.
The sphere is the other half of the control scheme. Focus's game page, and Steam under it, say you use a stolen Minoan sphere to solve puzzles by manipulating light, a force Daedalus wove into the island. Lenses. Mirrors. Coloured beams. Hidden clues. WCCFTech called the list short and the challenge fair, with an optional hint so you never truly stick. The notebook is the map you actually have. Dedeine called it notes safeguarded by other plunderers. Focus called it knowledge safeguarded in your notebook, following your crew. WCCFTech found her father's leftover clues in it. All three are the same object: a book you open when the stone does not explain itself. Use the book. The island is a labyrinth on purpose. Eric Chort and Naïla Bayou, writing on Xbox Wire on 8 June 2026, said they wanted it to feel endless — hidden paths, forgotten secrets. Endless is a hope. A light puzzle you have already done twice is a risk. The same June page said Sophia has been haunted by visions of an ancient era since childhood. The island is not a holiday. It is a call she stopped ignoring.
The other era is playable. Focus: shift between Sophia's Middle Ages and ancient Minoan times; two heroes linked by fate and the Macula's legacy. Dedeine, 9 June 2025: a golden-armoured hero who fought on the island 4,500 years before her. WCCFTech named that vision Theseus, a Minoan soldier tied to a dark force. The publisher's "two heroes" and the 4,500 years stay. A third timeline does not. Echoes of the past shape the fights of the present. That is the sentence on the store page. It is also why a Plague Tale that left France for a mythic island looks less like a history walk and more like a ruin you can fall through. Dedeine told Xbox Wire on 20 August that Requiem, rats aside, was grounded in real places, and that Resonance had to invent a civilisation because the Minoan world as we remember it is already a gap. Bañuls had to make the plague lore still true when the plague does not look like a tide of rats. Marco Puricelli, character artist on that interview, named the things they would not throw away: vistas that look like paintings, thick fog, volumetric light. Those are the house style. The island is the new set.
Olivier Derivière wrote the score, as he did for the first two. Focus's 27 August note said the original score was on streaming platforms the same day. Focus's 7 June date announcement had already put his name on the August calendar. The 25 August launch trailer, premiered at Gamescom Opening Night Live, is a reinterpretation of Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence. That tape is on Focus Entertainment's official YouTube as ULLFxFm6vvk. This page will carry that tape. Gamescom still had a playable demo at the Focus booth and the Xbox booth through the show. Sunday is three days after Thursday's unlock. The demo is a show-floor fact, not a review.
Combat is the identity and the argument. Chort, on the Official Xbox Podcast of 24 August, said Amicia was not the character for a sword, and that Resonance was the chance to do melee because Sophia is. Dedeine, 20 August: an actual A Plague Tale 3 was off the table after Hugo's ending in Requiem. The team was in love with Sophia. A Basilius game would have felt like the third one they were refusing. Lighter, he said, but not happy. That is the mood on the island. WCCFTech found Sophia and Leni likeable and modern in the mouth, and found the later horror-stealth stretches better than the soldier arenas. The same review put the campaign around fifteen hours and said it felt longer, because the arenas, the light puzzles, and the platforming share a shape. Fifteen hours is their clock, not a publisher number. There is no tighter cut on the record. The public PS5 review and the studio's own combat boast add up to one judgment: the parry is the new identity, and it is also the place a first-time Asobo melee system can feel like homework. Buy the ruins. Survive the arenas. Use the sphere when the stone goes dark.
Money, because a review that will not print a Metacritic tile should still print a sticker. Steam had the base game at $49.99 on 27 August. The Xbox Store had it at $59.99. Heritage Pack is $3.99 on both after launch: a Minoan Sword, Alec's Pendant, a 30-plus-page in-game artbook. Focus's 7 June pre-order note had given that pack away with a pre-order. The Collector Box is a European pre-order. Focus's launch note said deliveries begin at the end of October. The box is described only as "exclusive collectibles inspired by the game's universe," which is the phrase Focus used. Game Pass is the other price: no extra if you already pay for it, day one, Play Anywhere so a digital licence covers the console and the PC. Steam wants 75 GB on an SSD. Windows 10 or 11. DirectX 12. The Xbox Store names single player, 4K Ultra HD, HDR10. There is no co-op on that list. There is no Switch SKU on Focus's launch page. Three machines. One player.
Anna Demetriou is Sophia's actress. She told Xbox Wire on 20 August that the tone is still Plague Tale even when the content is not: grief, in different shapes. Asobo is in Bordeaux. Focus is the publisher that put Innocence and Requiem on shelves. Zouna is the in-house engine WCCFTech named for the lighting. This review did not sit in Bordeaux with a build. It sat with the 27 August cart as the stores described it, with Dedeine's two Xbox Wire letters, with Focus's own 25 and 27 August notes, and with one same-day PS5 review that was willing to say the combat bored it. 8 June 2025 was the reveal. 8 June 2026 was the date. 25 August was the last trailer. 27 August was the unlock. The story is a plunderer, an island, a sphere, and a book.
The judgment, without a scoreboard: buy it if you want Sophia's island, a notebook that is a map, a sphere that is a lamp, a companion who talks, and a Plague Tale that would rather parry than hide in a crowd of rats. Do not buy it if you need the old stealth sandbox as the whole meal, or if a melee loop that WCCFTech already called basic will sour the ruins for you, or if "fifteen years before Requiem" sounds like homework you refuse to do even though Dedeine said you can skip the homework. Platforms as of Thursday: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC. Developer: Asobo Studio. Publisher: Focus Entertainment. Single player. Game Pass. $49.99 on Steam, $59.99 on the Xbox Store. Official tape ULLFxFm6vvk on Focus's channel. The sphere and the notebook are the story.
