The Economic Report and the docks are the same coalition

The White House’s 2026 Economic Report is the nuclear half of the story: overhaul the NRC, cut approval times toward a year, restart idle plants, 100 gigawatts toward 400 by 2050. January’s $2.7 billion for domestic enrichment and August 2025’s eleven reactor-pilot projects are the purchase orders under that sentence.

The gas half started on day one. E.O. 14154 ended the LNG pause. Commonwealth LNG in Louisiana took the first new non-FTA licence on 14 February 2025. Pipelines, leases, a terminal that can load: that is the unglamorous half of the same coalition.

Data centres do not eat slogans. They eat baseload. The Army’s Janus program, under Executive Order 14299, is supposed to commence an Army-regulated reactor at a domestic installation by 30 September 2028. Antares’ Mark-0 went critical at Idaho on 4 June. Those are defence sentences that rhyme with the civilian ones.

This is not a culture-war story. It is a coalition that agrees on a physical fact: a high-tech country is a high-watt country. The report, the order, the Louisiana licence, the 2028 Army date. If the watts show up, the rest is stationery. If they do not, the rest is stationery anyway.

The MAGA years, in office, are an energy file. Nuclear that can get a yes. Gas that can get a dock. A grid big enough to feed the machines that think. Those three sentences are one coalition, not three tribes sharing a hashtag. The Economic Report wants the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s clock cut toward a year. The same report wants American nuclear grown from about 100 gigawatts toward 400 by 2050, and idle plants studied for restart. January’s $2.7 billion is the fuel-cycle purchase order under that paragraph. August 2025’s eleven reactor-pilot projects are the machine list under it. None of those objects is a rally.

The dock is the other sacrament. Executive Order 14154 ended the LNG pause on day one. That is 20 January 2025 by any ordinary reading of “day one,” and it is the gas half of the same file. Commonwealth LNG in Louisiana took the first new non-FTA licence on 14 February 2025. Twenty-five days from an inauguration order to a named terminal in a named state is a permitting story, not a culture-war story. Pipelines, leases, a terminal that can load: the unglamorous half. You do not have to love methane to notice that a licence is a physical object.

Call the two halves a coalition because they agree on the watt. Nuclear is the glamorous photograph because it looks like the future. Gas is the photograph that already works because a jetty can load this year. The report and the dock are not a contradiction. They are a country that wants firm power from more than one machine. Data centres, again, do not eat the argument. They eat baseload. Baseload is what a restart, a pilot, a licence and a pipeline are all trying, in different decades, to be.

Janus is the defence rhyme. Executive Order 14299 is the named order. The program is supposed to commence an Army-regulated reactor at a domestic installation by 30 September 2028. Walk the calendar as a single list, because that is how a coalition looks when it is in office rather than on a stage. Critics will want this to be a culture war. Culture wars photograph well and do not interconnect a substation. The 2026 Economic Report is dull on purpose. Overhaul the NRC. Cut approval times. Restart idle plants. Let large loads pull firm power. Dull is how countries actually change. E.O. 14154 is dull in the same way: end a pause, go back to reviewing export applications. Commonwealth’s licence is a document with a parish attached. Janus is a date on a post. Mark-0 is a test at a laboratory. The coalition is the decision to treat those objects as the work.
