The City of Carbondale opened the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station on Friday, 28 August 2026. KFVS12, Heartland News, filed the ceremony the same day. Governor JB Pritzker was there. The number on the building is $26 million. City leaders called it a new gateway to the entire southern Illinois region. Mobility, quality of life, economic development, tourism: those are their nouns. Those nouns sit next to the dollar and the date.

Under one roof as of Friday: Amtrak, Greyhound, FlixBus, JAX Mass Transit, and four other regional transit providers serving 28 counties. That is eight names if you count the four unnamed providers as a set. This paper will not invent the four names KFVS12 did not print. It will print Amtrak, Greyhound, FlixBus, JAX, and four more, 28 counties. A station that gathers intercity rail, two coach brands, a local mass-transit operator, and a 28-county remainder is a timetable glued to a building. Friday glued it.

The facility includes bicycle and pedestrian connections, and long- and short-term bike storage. A station that remembers bicycles is not a metaphor. It is a rack. Long-term and short-term are two kinds of rack. Pedestrian connections are the rest of the door. KFVS12 did not measure a kilometre of path. The connections are on the list, and the racks are on the list, and Friday is the day the list became a building.

The station also houses a welcome centre for Southern Illinois University, for prospective and incoming students. A university welcome desk inside a bus-and-train house is a civics sentence. Students arriving by Amtrak do not have to find a second address to be welcomed. That is the sentence. SIU is named. Prospective and incoming are the two kinds of student on the sign.

Pritzker’s quote, exact, from the Heartland News copy: “The Southern Illinois Multi-Modal Station, or SIMMS, represents our focus on Southern Illinois families and the economic development vision we have pursued across Illinois. SIMMS will connect residents with jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunity, and connect visitors with everything the region has to offer. This is just the beginning of our investment in public transportation in Southern Illinois and across our state.” Jobs, education, healthcare, opportunity: four nouns in one governor sentence. Families and a development vision: the frame. “Just the beginning”: his claim, not this paper’s forecast. There is no second-tranche dollar on this page. There is $26 million and a beginning.

Duckworth and Durbin are named as on hand. This file will not invent a floor speech they did not give to KFVS12. Presence is the fact. Friday is the fact. Carbondale is the city. SIMMS is the acronym the governor used: Southern Illinois Multi-Modal Station. Heartland News also wrote Multimodal as one word in the headline. Both spellings stand. The building does not care about the hyphen. The roof is the same roof.

What $26 million bought, as the local page bought it: one roof, eight providers if you count the unnamed four, 28 counties, Amtrak, Greyhound, FlixBus, JAX, bike storage two ways, pedestrian connections, an SIU welcome centre, a governor, two senators, a Friday in late August. What $26 million did not buy, on this page: a ridership forecast, a daily train count, a Greyhound timetable, a ribbon colour. Those belong to a later meter. Friday belongs to the opening.

Southern Illinois has been a geography people drive through. A multimodal station is an argument that some of them should be able to arrive without a car, and leave without one, and change from a coach to a train without crossing a car park in the rain. That argument is now a $26 million building. This newspaper is not a planning commission. It reports openings. 28 August is the opening. 28 counties is the catchment as the city described the other providers. SIU is the extra door.

Sunday 30 August is two days after Friday. The ceremony is over. The still does not show it. The still is a brick face, glass, an empty bay, bike racks, golden hour, no crowd, because the picture does not show a living person’s face. A station without a crowd in the frame is still a station. The crowd was Friday. The building is still there on Sunday.

City leaders said quality of life. The governor said families, jobs, education, healthcare, opportunity, visitors, and the beginning of more public transport investment. The local copy said tourism and economic development. Treat those claims as claims. $26 million is the number that came with them. Amtrak is the train. Greyhound and FlixBus are the coaches. JAX is the local mass transit. Four more providers cover 28 counties. The welcome centre and the bike racks are in the same building. Duckworth, Durbin, Pritzker, Carbondale, Friday.

A hopeful paper treats a bus bay as news when it has a date and a dollar and a list of operators. SIMMS has all three. The date is 28 August 2026. The dollar is 26 million. The list is Amtrak, Greyhound, FlixBus, JAX, and four others for 28 counties. Put the university desk inside the same roof. Put the bicycle storage on the same list. That is the table. The hyphen can wait. The trains should not.

Carbondale is a university city in the southern end of Illinois. Friday put the trains, the coaches, the local buses, the bikes, and the SIU welcome desk in one place. $26 million is the receipt. 28 August 2026 is the date on the receipt. Two days later it is still news, because a station that opened on Friday is still open on Sunday. SIMMS. $26 million. 28 counties. The empty bay is an invitation, not a crowd.
