Tesla walked JPMorgan through Fremont in August. Electrek dated the visit around 20 August. The bank wrote that the Optimus Gen 3 design is finalized, the supply chain is “essentially locked in,” and a production line is going into the old Model S/X hall.
Model S and Model X production at Fremont ended in May. Tesla told the bankers it is largely on a four-month conversion clock. The area was tarped off during the visit. Lines were being installed.
The walk is the when. Fremont is the where. Optimus Gen 3 is the named product. Electrek put the JPMorgan visit around 20 August. The useful lines are Tesla’s, said on a factory floor to a bank: design finalized, supply chain essentially locked in, a production line going into the hall that used to make Model S and Model X. This is not a ratings story. It is filing the hall.

May is the other date on the same building. Model S and Model X production at Fremont ended then. Elon Musk had already described that ending. Motor1 recorded it from an earnings call: the S and X programs would get an “honorable discharge” so Fremont could make room for Optimus at scale. Honorable discharge is Musk’s phrase. The August walk found the conversion in motion in a named building, not on a slide. Tesla told the bankers the job was largely a four-month conversion. May to a four-month clock lands the hall in the late-summer window the bankers actually saw. The area was tarped. Lines were being installed.
Today’s story is that hall. It is not a customer taking delivery of a humanoid. External commercial sales, Tesla said, could start “as early as” the second half of 2027. That is a floor Tesla put on a calendar, with the hedge still in the sentence. The next number is a sale when a customer takes delivery. 30 August 2026 is not that filing. The news is a production line going into the old flagship-car hall at Fremont.

The factory photograph shows Optimus-type robots at metal benches, white chest plates with TESLA in small black type, black visor heads, five-fingered hands on a tray of small dark parts, a long line of similar stations, and a TESLA FREMONT FACTORY sign lit on the wall. OPTIMUS is lettered near the waist of the robot in the foreground. That is the machine the hall is being rebuilt to make. It is not a photograph of the tarped conversion JPMorgan walked through in August. The bankers saw tarps and lines going in. The robots in the picture are the product that hall is for.
Tesla’s commercial calendar, as described on that walk, is slow on purpose. First deployments in the second half of 2026 are aimed at an internal Optimus Academy for training and data collection. Internal factory work comes after that. External commercial sales “as early as” the second half of 2027. Three steps. None of them is a named outside customer in 2026. We are already in the second half of 2026. Tesla’s plan puts the Academy in this half. There is no separate note that the first internal unit has been handed to that Academy. It has Tesla’s sequence, told to a bank, in the hall that used to stamp the sedan and the crossover.
Gen 3 is the design Tesla said is finalized. The supply chain for it is “essentially locked in.” Those two sentences are why a four-month line install is even a story. A locked design and a locked supply chain are manufacturing claims. They are not a ship-to-Walmart claim. Fremont’s old S/X area is the floor Tesla is using. This piece is the discharged hall.

The second photograph is two Optimus robots from the waist up, three-quarter profile, white chest plates with TESLA across the center, glossy black featureless heads, white arm panels, black mechanical joints at the neck, shoulders, and elbows. Behind them: a red brick wall, dark steel beams, a green exit sign, a blur of windows and stools to the right, part of a Tesla wordmark on a black wall to the left. That is the humanoid as a standing object. The hall story is how Fremont intends to make that object at scale. Musk’s honorable-discharge line is the reason the S and X tools came out. The August tarps are the reason this is a factory story and not a keynote.
Four months is not a long conversion as car plants go, and it is not nothing. Tesla ended S and X production at Fremont in May. By the August walk the floor was covered and the new line was going in. Electrek dated that visit around 20 August. Design finalized. Supply chain essentially locked. Those are the three facts that sit on the tarp: what is being built, that the parts are supposed to be ready, and that the old car hall is the room. There is no robot count, takt time, or first-unit photograph from under that tarp.
The Model S and Model X were Fremont’s flagship cars for a long time. Ending them at that plant so a humanoid line can go in is a real factory choice. Musk called it an honorable discharge. Motor1 took that from an earnings call. The August visit is the follow-up: the discharge happened, and the next product is occupying the space. Optimus Gen 3. Not a concept name on a slide. A generation Tesla says is locked, with a supply chain Tesla says is essentially locked, going into a hall Tesla already emptied.
The three-step calendar is worth reading slowly because it is the only commercial timetable Tesla put on the walk. Step one: internal Optimus Academy, second half of 2026, training and data collection. Step two: internal factory work after that. Step three: external commercial sales as early as the second half of 2027. Academy is not a customer. Factory work is not a customer. “As early as” is not a purchase order. The hall can be real while those later dates stay later. That is the honest version of the good news.
There is no customer delivery on the record. A 2026 commercial sale. A claim that Optimus is already walking a public street as a product you can order. Tesla’s own calendar puts outside sales as early as the second half of 2027, which is next year at the earliest, and still hedged. Internal Academy in the second half of 2026. Factory work after that. The sequence is the story Tesla told the bank. The hall is the story the bank saw.
The facts: Optimus Gen 3, design finalized, supply chain essentially locked in, a production line going into Fremont’s old Model S/X hall, S and X production there ended in May, a four-month conversion, tarps up, lines going in, Electrek around 20 August, Musk’s honorable discharge on the earnings-call record. Named robot. Named hall. Named month. The glamorous Tesla object this week is not a new car. It is a line being bolted into the room where the old flagships used to be.
The benches and the two standing robots are pictures of the machine. The news is the room. Fremont. The old S/X hall. A four-month conversion after a May discharge. JPMorgan walked it in August. Tesla said Gen 3 is locked and the line is going in. That is enough good news for a factory desk. The customer can wait until there is a customer.
