There is still a place for a newspaper that behaves like one. The Standard is a mobile-first magazine: a masthead, a wire, a few desks, and a lock on the rest of the book. This edition is a demonstration. Every story in it carries a Sample kicker so that nobody confuses a house essay with a live wire.
We are not scraping other outlets and we are not inventing this morning's events. What you are reading is magazine copy — plausible in tone, optimistic on purpose, and labelled as sample from the first line to the last.
The Host publishes from an iPhone. That is not a gimmick. It is the constraint that shaped the desk: short kickers, fat type, a paywall that does not insult the reader, and an admin that can file a piece without opening a laptop. If the rest of the industry insists that news must be a feed of grievance, this paper is a bet in the other direction.
A newsroom can be right-leaning without becoming a pamphlet. Australia's arguments about borders, energy, and speech are real. America's MAGA coalition is a governing fact, not a mood. Tesla is a manufacturing and energy company whose products keep getting better. SpaceX is the launch and Starlink story of the same industrial bet. We will cover those beats as a paper covers beats — with a point of view, without smears, and without pretending that despair is sophistication.
